THE APARTMENT BLOCK IN THE OLD TOWN OF KLAIPĖDA

Task

To design a complex of trade, services and entertainment buildings and apartment buildings with the name “Danės galerija” in a particularly sensitive and unique place of the Old Town of Klaipėda.

Solution

The idea of the stage of pre-project proposals of the complex is based on solutions of the detailed plan and provisions of the special plan, established historical heritage protection restrictions, the essence of which is the uniqueness and exclusivity of the territory in the overall context of Klaipėda city as well as the coastal region, taking into account the significance of the objects of cultural heritage – the complex of the Klaipėda castle and bastions, P. Lindenau shipyard complex, which are in the neighborhood of the planned buildings.
During shaping of the architectural idea, the unique landscape of the area, determined by the Danė River, its estuaries and the Curonian Lagoon, was taken into account, as well as the general context of the Old Town of Klaipėda with its part of German architectural stylistics, which is characteristic to this land. It is anticipated not to contrast with the environment but integrate harmoniously into the overall context, using chosen forms and volumes, characteristic of this area and the architecture of this land.
The efforts are made to make this territory as attractive as possible to the public (including the guests from seasonal cruise ships), to adapt it to the needs of society, therefore, one of the essential guidelines is the need to take into account human factors, i.e, the environment must be just cool, safe, aesthetic, gracious at any time of the year.
